Listening comprehension

In this section of the test, you will have the chance to show how well you understand spoken English. There are four parts to this sections, with special directions for each part.


PART I

Directions: For each question, you will see a picture and you will hear four short statements. When you hear the statements, look at the picture and choose the statement that best describes what you see in the picture.

Example:



Correct answer: Statement (B): They're having a meeting - best describes what you see in the picture.





PART II

Directions: You will hear a question or statement, followed by three responses. You are to choose the best response to each question or statement.

Example:

Correct answer: The best answer to the question 'How are you?' is response (A), 'I am fine, thank you.'





PART III

Directions: You will hear a short conversation between two people. You will then read a question about each conversation. The question will be followed by four answers. You are to choose the best answer to each question.



Example:

Question: When do they plan to meet?

(A) At 1:30pm
(B) At 3:00 pm
(C) At 4:30pm
(D) After work

PART IV

Directions: You will hear a short talk. You will then read two or more questions about each short talk. The questions will be followed by four answers. You are to choose the best answer to each question.

Question: What do passengers taking domestic flights have to do?
(A) Notify the flight attendants

Reading

In this section of the test, you will have the chance to show how well you understand written English. There are three parts to this section, with special directions for each part.




PART V

Directions: The questions consist of incomplete sections. Four words or phrases, marked (A), (B), (C) and (D), are given beneath each sentence. You are to choose one word or phrase that best completes the sheet.

Example:

Because the equipment is very delicate, it must be handled with ____________.

(A) caring
(B) careful
(C) care
(D) carefully

PART VI

Directions: Each question in this section consists of a sentence that has four words or phrases underlined. The four underlined parts of the sentence are marked (A), (B), (C) and (D). You are to identify one underlined word or phrase that should be corrected or rewritten.

Example:

All employee are required to wear their identification badges while at work.

(A) (B) (C) (D)

Correct answer: (A)
The sentence should read: ?All employees are required to wear their identification badges while at work.?



Part VII

Directions: The questions are based on a selection of reading materials, such as notices, letters, forms, newspaper and magazine articles, and advertisements. You are to choose the one best answer, (A), (B), (C) or (D), to each question. Answer all questions following each reading selection on the basis of what is stated or implied in that selection.

Example:

The Museum of Technology is a "hands-on" museum, designed for people to experience science at work. Visitors are encouraged to use, test and handle the objects on display. Special demonstrations are scheduled for the first and second Wednesdays of each month at 13:30. Open Tuesday - Friday 12:00 - 16:30, Saturday 10:00 - 17:30, and Sunday 11:00 - 16:30.

Question: When during the month can visitors see special demonstrations?

(A) Every weekend
(B) The first two Wednesdays
(C) One afternoon a week
(D) Every other Wednesday

What is the format of the TOEIC® test?
Based on real-life work settings, the TOEIC® test consists of 200 multiple-choice questions categorised into listening comprehension and reading sections.

TOEIC® test questions are based on real-life work settings in an international environment (meetings, travel, telephone conversations, etc). The TOEIC® test is a paper and pencil test consisting of 200 multiple-choice questions, divided into 2 separately timed sections. Test takers respond to questions by marking one response from a choice of 4 (A, B, C, D) with a pencil on a machine-scannable answer sheet.

Section 1: Listening comprehension

* A variety of recorded statements, questions, and short conversations in English.
* You will answer 100 questions based on what you hear.
* You will have 45 minutes to complete this section.

This section comprises 4 parts:
Part 1: photographs (20 questions)
Part 2: question-response (30 questions)
Part 3: Short conversations (30 questions)
Part 4: Short talks (20 questions)

Section 2: Reading

* A variety of materials to be read.
* You will respond to 100 questions based on what you have read.
* This section will take 75 minutes to complete.

This section comprises 3 parts:
Part 5: Incomplete sentences (40 questions)
Part 6: Error recognition (20 questions)
Part 7: Reading comprehension (40 questions)

The test lasts approximately 2.5 hours. The remaining time will be used to respond to biographical questions and a brief questionnaire about educational and work history.

Candidates are given a score report , which shows their results. You are awarded separate marks for the written and oral comprehension sections, on a scale from 5 to 495 points. The total score is hence between 10 and 990 points.

Test takers can be provided with a TOEIC® certificate stating details of the candidate, TOEIC® score, and date when the test was taken.
